The Truth About Wood Countertops

Posted on September 22, 2011 By tmaberry (Edit) 1 Comment

One week ago, we provided you with a few reasons why marble countertops aren’t the best surface material to install in the kitchen. But what about wood? Many people believe that wood countertops are susceptible to stains, scratches and water damage. But those myths couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, today’s wood countertops go through high quality manufacturing processes, thus requiring very little maintenance on behalf of the end user.

Example of a kitchen we designed with a beautiful wood surfaced island.

Are wood countertops prone to scratching?

Sure, but what surface material isn’t? Limestone, granite and slate surfaces will also scratch when a jagged or unfinished object runs across it. If scratching is a problem but you still want a wood surface, consider a butcher block or distressed wood.

Are wood countertops heat resistant?

Very much so, even more so than engineered stone. In fact, manufacturers of solid surfaces warn against placing anything hot on the surface because it will melt. Wood doesn’t have this problem.

Do wood countertops store bacteria?

Any surface will hold bacteria if it is not disinfected regularly and properly. Wood countertops are no different.
